One of the most densely populated counties in the state, Essex County is located in the north eastern part of New Jersey and is part of the New York Metropolitan area. According to the 2000 census close to 800,000 people reside in Essex. Newark is the county seat and is one of the biggest cities in the state.

The eastern part of the county is very urban and includes towns such as East Orange and Belleville.
